The White Horse Press is run as a partnership by Alison and Andrew Johnson and their daughter Sarah.

Alison and Andrew met in Oxford, but have spent most of the past 30 years living on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, where they now run a croft and manage some offshore islands as nature reserves.

Sarah, who read English at Oxford and whose PhD dealt with Nature, Culture and Landscape in Pacific Travel Accounts, now lives near Cambridge.

Erica and her friend, Meg

The business takes its name from Sarah’s Eriskay pony, Erica (now sadly deceased). Eriskay ponies are a local Hebridean breed, taking their name from the Isle of Eriskay, near South Uist.

Acropolis marble

The horse on our logo has a more classical pedigree, being derived from a 5th century B.C. marble fragment from the Acropolis in Athens (photo here by C. Carlstead)
